Workshop Description

For many clients substance use is intertwined with their sexual behavior and expression. The recovery process often overlooks the impact of sobriety on sexual expression. This program will explore the relationship between sex and substance use with an emphasis on methamphetamine and men who have sex with men; review sexual templates and scripts, how they are developed; assessing and overcoming the shame associated with high risk behaviors; integrating sexual activity into the recovery plan and tools for helping clients return to healthy sexual interactions while in recovery.

This workshop is designed for Master’s and PhD level clinicians who are exploring the role sex plays in addiction and recovery or their overall work as a clinician. It is also designed to support those training to become Sex Therapist, Sex Counselors, or Sex Educators, and other spiritual,  behavioral, medical, and sexual health and wellness professionals. CAC-II, MACS and other addiction counselors or therapists are encouraged to attend. The workshop is not designed for CAC-I or Peer Support Specialists.

This workshop will not include touch.

Meet Your Instructor!

Nick Marzo, MS LPC, LMHC, CST-S, ACS

(he/him/sir)

Hi, I’m Nick. I am a trans masculine genderqueer Professional Counselor, Sex, Therapist and Supervisor and I am looking forward to sharing my knowledge with you! I am a seasoned and talented therapist but my true joy in life is mentoring, supervising, and sharing what I have learned across my career.

Sex and Recovery? Such a complex topic. So often, folks in recovery discover how intertwined their sexuality or sexual behaviors were intertwined with their substance use. Clinicians deserve tools in their toolbox to support the client’s exploration and discovery, as they learn how sex and recovery can go hand in hand.

Why Me? Because I come at things through a very queer lens and give you, the learner, permission to explore your boundaries and break free of the messages they teach us as therapists. I follow a harm reduction recovery plan, am sex positive in all that I do, and have the necessary training in both addictions and sexuality to support your learning.
